Research Interests

My main research interests focus on evolutionary and molecular biology, marine biology, biogeography and conservation biology. My principal studies have mainly focused on the impact of population size variations in modifying species genetic diversity and geographic structuring through time and on the identification of gene flow-life history trait correlations. I have been using molecular tools for my own researches (allozymes, mtDNA sequences, introns and microsatellites) on several species from different taxa (coral reef fishes, marine invertebrates and tropical butterflies), in order to disentangle the effects of demographic history and life history traits on present day genetic make up. This procedure is essential when defining geographical scales of population’s connectivity for conservation management purposes. I am currently working on a project aiming to assess the anthropogenic impacts of artificial structures introduction on the genetic structure and diversity of marine invertebrates (polychaetes and bivalves) in the North Adriatic Sea.
