PREDICTING CHANGES IN A CHANGING WORLD

Integrating ecological, analytical, economic, political and juridical aspects

to forecast and manage the impacts of global changes in marine systems

Our planet is facing unprecedented rates of change. Threats and factors driving change most owe to human activities, that deeply alter the environment. There is growing concern about how natural and human-managed systems will react to current and future environmental changes. and about the possible biological, economical and societal consequences.

Threats from global change are particularly severe in coastal marine ecosystems, where human activities have been historically concentrated and where few dominant threats have led to dramatic losses of natural habitats. To halt the trend and guarantee future sustainability it is fundamentally important to increase public awareness and scientific understanding of these changes, and link scientific findings to policy decisions.

The “ISA Topic 2008” initiative

The present initiative is supported through a grant of the Institute of Advanced Studies (ISA) of Bologna University. It aims to encourage the scientific debate and promote the public awareness of the threats related to global changes and of the needs for the future sustainability of our coastal marine systems. This aim will be pursued through integrated multidisciplinary lectures, public presentations, an International Winter School and a Workshop, which will see the participation of internationally renown Italian and foreign scientists.
